Owls

We look after injured, maltreated, and orphaned owls. They are released when and if they seem capable of surviving in the wild but some, with ongoing problems, become permanent captives.

Doyenne of the current group (December 2002) is Hooty, a female tawny with a damaged wing, who we have had since 1986. Since 1988 she has shared her life with Nutty, a gingery male with only one poor eye. They now share an aviary with Twig, a male whose long-term partner, Nelson (a one-eyed female) died in 2002.

In a separate aviary are two barn owls. They were captive-bred but kept in unsuitable conditions and eventually passed to us by the RSPCA. The female rarely comes out of her box but relies for her food on the male who takes it too her as soon as we put it out.

Biggles, the owl pictured here and on the signpost, is not one of ours. Further details about him can be found by going to www.matrix2000.co.uk and clicking on 'Biggles the Tawny Owl'.
